Conservation Assessment of the Paintings Collection

FAIN: PG-50704-09

Monmouth County Historical Association (Freehold, NJ 07728-1710)
Bernadette Sigler Rogoff (Project Director: May 2008 to June 2011)

The hiring of a consultant who would conduct a conservation assessment of 175 oil paintings on canvas and assign priorities for conservation treatment. The historical association maintains six historic sites and holds more than 30,000 objects of fine and decorative arts and artifacts, which are used for exhibition and for educational programs. The paintings that are the subject of this project date from the mid-18th to the mid-20th centuries; they range from academic paintings such as Emmanuel Leutze's "Washington at the Battle of Monmouth," to folk art, marine paintings, and an extensive collection of portraits of Monmouth County sitters.

This project will engage a professional arts preservationist to evaluate the present condition of the Association's fine art collection, and offer a plan of action and estimated cost for the preservation of the collection.
