Preservation of the Textile Collection at the National Museum of Mexican Art

Funding supports the purchase of storage furniture and materials to house the museum's textile collection, which includes a variety of clothing, accessories, household textiles, headdresses, and processional objects from Mexico. The collection is used in research, exhibitions, and educational programming.

The National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA) is seeking assistance for the purchase of cabinetry and necessary storage materials for its growing textile collection, comprised of various indigenous festival costumes, attire, tapestries, etc. from several Mexican states. The NMMA built vaults on-site in 2001 to house its permanent collection, and the textile collection is the last, and most recently expanding, section of the collection in need of cabinetry that will preserve and protect the pieces. The NMMA has an experienced permanent collection director and staff, whose expertise will streamline the project; previous consultation and assessments have also prepared NMMA's staff for selection, ordering, and installing the cabinetry in vault 217. Throughout its 22-year history, the NMMA has acquired a significant permanent collection and is eager to finally be able to adequately store the entirety of the collection on-site.
