Digitization of 100,000 pages of Montana
newspapers dating from 1864 to 1963, as part of the state’s continuing
participation in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).
The Montana Historical Society
(MHS) requests funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to
digitize an additional 100,000 pages of Montana’s microfilmed newspapers for
the Montana Newspaper Digitization Project. The MHS holds the most complete
collection of Montana newspapers on microfilm, including all significant titles
from the years 1864 (the year the first newspaper was published in Montana) to
1963. The Montana Newspaper Digitization Project will deliver 100,000 digitized
newspaper pages to the Library of Congress as well as all required accompanying
digital, textual and microfilm deliverables.
This project, which will add newspaper coverage through 1963 to the
existing Montana content on Chronlicling America, will increase depth and
breadth of coverage to the history of the boom and bust cycles that define much
of Montana and western U.S. history.
