To develop the resources for basic research on American ethnic groups by way of their most important voluntary associations - fraternal insurance associations. The broad goals are to locate and identify the surviving records of the ethnic fraternals; to collect and preserve their records at the Immigration History Research Center; to advise the fraternals, with respect to other appropriate and suitably staffed repositories; to organize and describe all records of a select number of major fraternals and their local units, and to improve access to these material by compiling a national directory of all ethnic fraternal archives.
