To support the improvement of the environment to preserve archival collections and rare books related to early American history.

The Massachusetts Historical Society seeks a grant to install an inert gas fire suppression system in a 1972 library stack addition to the Society's 1899 headquarters building. The MHS building is a registered National Landmark, but all improvements described in this proposal will be made within the library stacks and will not affect either the historical fabric or use of the original landmark structure. The MHS presently has no fire suppression system. Inert gas fire suppression systems do not harm the environment.
