The nucleus of this collection was established in the early 20th century as the research library of the Museum of the American Indian. It includes early books of voyage and exploration, Christian missionary reports, native language dictionaries, and captivity narratives in more than 40,000 volumes and 200 cubic feet of archival materials on the indigenous peoples of the western hemisphere. The university will conserve the collection and create digital surrogates for 200 of the most rare and fragile books.
