Abstract: The volume evolved as a side product of Schmidtke's "Zaydi Manuscript Tradition" (ZMT) project, which aims to bring together the widely dispersed Zaydi manuscript culture in its entirety in a single repository. It focuses on Muhammad b. Muhammad b. Isma'il al-Mansur (1915–2016), one of the most prominent scholars, bureaucrats, and politicians of twentieth-century Yemen, and his private collection of manuscripts. Based on his ijaza ("license to transmit"), his own writings, and other documentary materials, as well as his collection of manuscripts and the many handwritten comments and notes added by al-Mansur, the book discusses his biography and intellectual milieu and provides insights into the manuscript culture of twentieth-century Yemen. Taken together, the volume contributes to the study of twentieth-century Yemen's intellectual and social history, and it immediately relates to recent work of historical anthropologists specializing in Yemen.

Abstract: Iranian libraries hold only few manuscripts that testify to the extended and intensive Mu'tazilite past in the various centers of Zaydi scholarship in the Caspian region, in Hurasan, and in Rayy. Among the few Mu'tazilite Zaydi works preserved in the libraries of Iran is a miscellany held by the library of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Shiraz ('Allama Tabataba'i Library). The magmu'a, a facsimile of which is included in the present publication, was written between 673/1274-75 and 676/1277 and contains doctrinal works by Imami and Zaydi theologians from both Iran and from Yemen. Most of the codex consists of a theological summa, a ta'liq that had been composed or transcribed by one Abu Tahir b. Ali al-Saffar which was based on the Kitab al-Usul by Abu Ali Muhammad b. Hallad al-Basri, the distinguished disciple of the Mu'tazilite theologian and founder of the Bahšamiyya, Abu Hašim al-Gubba'i (d. 321/933), with an unknown number of commentary layers in between.

Abstract: The Islamicate world is renowned for its numerous public and private libraries, expression of an overall book culture that seems to aptly characterize large segments of Near and Middle Eastern societies beyond denominational borders throughout time. While some libraries have completely vanished, others can partly be reconstructed on the basis of the dispersed codices and/or data provided in secondary historical sources. Since much of Yemen's manuscript tradition has come down to us, the preserved material allows for a meticulous longue durée study of Yemen's religio-cultural history through its libraries, the outlines of which will be sketched out in the lecture.

Abstract: Rudolf Strothmann (b. 1877, d. 1960) played a pioneering role in the scholarly exploration of Shīʿī Islam in Western, and in particular German, scholarship. Between 1910 and 1923, he published a number of pathbreaking studies on the Zaydiyya, consulting primarily the recently purchased collections of Yemeni Zaydī manuscripts in Berlin. At the same time, and to the extent that this was possible in view of the lack of relevant sources in Germany and the rest of Europe, Strothmann began to delve into Twelver Shīʿī literature, an endeavour which culminated in his 1926 monograph, Die Zwölfer-Schīʿa: Zwei religionsgeschichtliche Charakterbilder aus der Mongolenzeit, a portrait of the two prominent seventh/thirteenth-century Imāmī scholars Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (d. 672/1274) and Raḍī al-Dīn ʿAlī b. Mūsā Ibn Ṭāwūs (d. 664/1266). During the later decades of his life, Strothmann primarily focussed on various strands of Ismāʿīlism. His rich published work testifies to his erudition and versatility and continues to form an important point of departure for scholars working on different aspects of Shīʿism in the early twenty-first century. In addition, Strothmann’s use of the manuscript treasures of Berlin State Library between 1908 and 1926 reflects his evolution as a scholar during those years. This study examines the earlier decades of Strothmann’s life and his formation as a theologian and a scholar of Semitic languages and Islamic culture. Abstract: On 18 September 1929, Rudolf Strothmann (1877–1960) embarked on a trip to the Middle East, in the course of which he travelled to Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Anatolia, the Levant, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, and Yemen. He returned to Hamburg on 10 May 1930, nearly eight months after his departure. The trip is documented in three detailed letters (or Ansichtskarten, as he calls them) that Strothmann sent to Carl Heinrich Becker (1876–1933) on 19 December 1929, 10 March 1930, and 8 May 1930. This paper offers an edition of Strothmann’s third Ansichtskarten to Carl Heinrich Becker, with annotations.

Abstract: The arrival of large numbers of Yemeni manuscripts in European libraries towards the end of the nineteenth century and in the early twentieth century was a sensation that was enthusiastically received by the scholarly world. One of the principal reasons for this enthusiastic reception was the upsurge of South Arabian studies in Europe since the first half of the nineteenth century, together with the hope that the new material would fill some of the gaps in the literary sources on the history and geography of southern Arabia, especially during the pre-Islamic period. The most significant such lacuna was the missing volumes 1 through 7 and 9 of al-Hamdānī’s Iklīl. The two most important collections of Yemeni manuscripts that arrived in Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries had been gathered by Eduard Glaser and Giuseppe Caprotti, respectively, and their collections were sold to Berlin, London, and Vienna (Glaser) and to Munich, Milan, and the Vatican (Caprotti). The collections included some new material on South Arabian history (including volumes 1, 2, and 6 of the Iklīl), but they also opened up entirely new vistas and laid the foundation for the new discipline of Zaydi studies. Unlike South Arabian studies, the study of Zaydism had a slow start, with initially only a few scholars being interested in this entirely new field. Moreover, the scholarly exploration of the respective subcollections depended on the availability of catalogues. The early history of the Caprotti collection is intimately linked to Eugenio Griffini. Caprotti had dispatched nearly his entire manuscript collection of some 1,600 codices to Griffini, who kept it in his apartment in Milan until 1909, when the collection was donated to the Ambrosiana Library. Griffini was also the first and, for a long time, the only scholar to study the collection and prepare studies as well as catalogues of it...

Abstract: The article presents an editio princeps of Masʾala fī anna ijmāʿ ahl al-bayt ḥujja by the fifth/eleventh-century Zaydī al-Muwaffaq bi-llāh al-Jurjānī, author of the K. al-Iḥāṭa fī ʿilm al-kalām and the K. al-Iʿtibār wa-salwat al-ʿārifīn, one of the earliest extant substantial discussions on the consensis of the family of the Prophet among the Zaydis.

Abstract: Over the past decades, digital collections of texts produced by Muslim authors writing in Arabic during the premodern period have mushroomed. Major libraries include al-Maktaba al-Shāmila, currently containing some 7,000 books; Noor Digital Library, with 35,169 books to date; PDF Books Library, currently containing 4,355 books; Arabic Collections Online (ACO), providing access to 15,131 volumes; Shia Online Library, with 4,715 books; and al-Maktaba al-Waqfiyya, containing some 10 million pages of published books (in addition to a growing number of manuscript surrogates), to name only the most important ones. Moreover, since printing technologies were adopted in the Islamic world at a relatively late stage and slow rate, [fig. 1] much of the written cultural production of the Islamic world is until today preserved in manuscript form. And although there has been a steady rise in the publication of manuscript catalogs all over the Islamic world over the past one hundred years, much material is still unaccounted for, and discoveries of titles that were believed to be lost or that were entirely unknown regularly occur. In parallel, numerous libraries have started to digitize their collections of Islamic manuscripts, and a fair number among them provide open access to their holdings through institutional digital repositories, in addition to a growing number of online gateways to Islamic manuscripts. At the same time, what is available online, whether published or in manuscript form, is only the tip of the iceberg ....
