Voices of Change II: Bringing Radio Haiti Home

FAIN: PW-259094-18

Duke University (Durham, NC 27705-4677)
Naomi L Nelson (Project Director: July 2017 to March 2022)

Enhanced description of nearly 4,000 audio recordings in the Radio Haiti Archive and a pilot project to test more effective access channels for Haiti and other underserved areas.

Voices of Change II: Bringing Radio Haiti Home, a twelve-month, $85,753 project at the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Duke University, will result in the enhanced description of the Radio Haiti Archive and a roadmap for repatriating the Archive’s 5,300 audio recordings to Haiti. The Radio Haiti team will create detailed, trilingual description for all the recordings, vastly improving the ability to search the individual programs and making the collection more accessible to those who do not speak Haitian Creole. They will also complete a pilot to explore whether YouTube, Internet Archive or a low-bandwidth version of the Duke Digital Repository would provide the most effective access for people in Haiti and other underserved areas. Voices of Change II provides far-reaching access to a singular archive of information and voices and provides a model for the repatriation of other such displaced archives.

Broadcasting memory: Radio Haiti and devoir de memoire (Conference Paper/Presentation)
Title: Broadcasting memory: Radio Haiti and devoir de memoire
Author: Laura Wagner
Author: Craig Breadon
Author: J. J. Dominque
Abstract: As an outspoken voice of Haitian democracy under station director Jean Dominique, Radio Haiti occupied a unique place in Haitian culture and politics from the early 1970s until 2003. As the first news outlet in Haiti to broadcast serious reporting in Haitian Creole – the language of the Haitian majority – Radio Haiti provided a platform to amplify the voices of people who had long been socially and politically excluded. Broadcasting in Haitian Creole was itself a critique of the power structure that favored the French-speaking political and economic elite. In its news, interviews, and programming, Radio Haiti also undertook devoir de mémoire --memory work, the duty to remember – – by revisiting their own archives and commemorating key moments in Haitian history as part of a battle against erasure and forgetting. We contend that the interviews that make up a significant portion of the collection are oral history, representing rare real-time accounts of events that are not recorded in written histories, and voices of rural farmers, factory workers, marketwomen, Vodou adherents, and other people whose words are largely absent from written histories. This archive is itself an act of devoir de mémoire -- preserving Haitian history as part of a duty to remember. Speakers include J.J. Dominique (Jean Dominique’s daughter and Radio Haiti station manager), as well as Laura Wagner, Radio Haiti Archivist, and Craig Breaden, Audiovisual Archivist, from Duke University’s Rubenstein Library.

Title: Rasanblaj ou eklatman? Enfòmasyon ou teledjòl? Deba ou voye-monte? Teknoloji, verite ak objektivite jounalis nan yon mond k ap chanje
Author: Laura Wagner
Abstract: This round table discussion examines Haitian journalism in a rapidly-changing world, in which technological innovations such as social media have democratized the production and circulation of information while also creating new avenues for misinformation, rumor, division, and unfounded opinion. Who can be a journalist in Haiti today? How have notions of truth and objectivity in Haitian journalism evolved through the late 20th century to the early 21st century? As technology increasingly allows for preservation of what were once impermanent media, might journalists consider themselves not only collectors and disseminators of information, but also documentarians of the past and of history. How might the digitized archives of a radio station -- ephemeral broadcasts now transformed into historical documents -- inform and shape contemporary journalistic practice? Specifically, what is the significance and relevance of the digital online archives of Radio Haïti-Inter to investigative journalists on the ground in Haiti today?

Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever (Public Lecture or Presentation)
Title: Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever
Abstract: Befitting Leyla McCalla's family heritage, the multidisciplinary Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever, commissioned and premiered by Duke Performances, amplifies source materials from the Radio Haiti Archive at Duke to lift up everyday voices of resistance and celebration in late-20th century Haiti. Collaborator and director Kiyoko McCrae, known for her devised theater work, weaves together original music, archival recordings, dance, and video projection to create an unparalleled theatrical experience. In commemoration, the piece arrives twenty years after the assassination of Jean Léopold Dominique, the owner and activist behind the independent, Kreyol-speaking station, Radio Haiti-Inter, whose legacy influences McCalla as she synthesizes and premieres this live performance that explores the complexities of what it means to be Haitian. The performance debuted March 4, March 5, and March 6, 2020.

Radio Haiti Pilot Dashboard (Report)
Title: Radio Haiti Pilot Dashboard
Author: Breaden, Craig
Author: Zoss, Angela
Abstract: In 2019-2020, Duke Libraries’ Assessment & Data Visualization Analyst, Angela Zoss, with support from Naomi L. Nelson, Principal Investigator and Project Director, and Craig Breaden, Project Manager, developed a Tableau-based analysis tool for evaluating both the YouTube/Internet Archive pilot project and use of the Radio Haiti Archive at large. The near-term goal of the “Radio Haiti Dashboard” was to provide detailed views of when and where, and on what platform, users were viewing specific resources in the Archive. In the longer term, the goal is to gain a more nuanced understanding of how we might effectively bring Library resources to non-academic audiences, by comparing resource use on secondary platforms, like YouTube or the Internet Archive, with resource use via the Duke Digital Repository. See Appendix 2 for a static image of the dashboard.
Date: 7/15/2020
Access Model: Developed for internal use. We hope to share it more broadly in the future.
