The development of a processing plan and pilot online project portal for archival collections representing six independent Chicago art galleries and totaling 800 linear feet of materials, including exhibition files, promotional materials, administrative records, correspondence, publications, photographs, slides, and audiovisual materials from 1973 through the early 2010s.
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (School), in partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago (Museum), will undertake a year-long Foundations process to plan for a full collections processing project for the archives of six notable Chicago galleries: ARC, Artemisia, Rhona Hoffman, Donald Young, Randolph Street Gallery and Threewalls. The School and Museum will create a processing plan for the six gallery collections, supported by preservation and content assessments for each, and pilot a public-facing Chicago Gallery Project website, created with the expertise of Chicago curators, archive staff, and artists. This site will enhance discoverability of the School’s and Museum’s gallery collections and similar content held by other institutions.

Chicago Art Galleries Project Processing Plan (Report)Title: Chicago Art Galleries Project Processing Plan
Author: School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago
Abstract: As one of the deliverables produced during the grant period for this NEH Foundations project—the Chicago Art Galleries Project (“CAGP”)—this processing plan endeavors to:
1. Lay a methodological foundation for the future processing of our six gallery archives: ARC Gallery, Artemisia Gallery, Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Randolph Street Gallery, Threewalls, and Donald Young Gallery.
2. Analyze the data produced by the Collection Assessment with respect to descriptive, organizational and preservation needs of the six gallery archives.
3. Draw a comparison between current and previous preservation assessments.
4. Determine what effect pre-processing (i.e. assessment) will likely have on collection processing rates.
5. Produce a preliminary budget that will inform our forthcoming Implementation proposal application to the next cycle of the NEH’s Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Grant, with an anticipated deadline of July 16, 2024.
