Spelman College Archives Stabilization Project Compact Shelving

FAIN: PZ-50147-08

Spelman College (Atlanta, GA 30314-4399)
Taronda Spencer (Project Director: October 2007 to December 2009)

The purchase and installation of compact shelving to house the college's archives and special collections, which date from the late 1880s.

Spelman College seeks funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to purchase and install compact shelving for the College Archives. Replacing exiting shelving with a compact system will enhance the physical control over the institutional records and special collections housed in the Archives, maximize the storage capacity of the facility, and provide space for its continued growth. As the official repository of the College, the collection consists primarily of administrative records, departmental and program records, student organization records, campus publications, and photographs. The Archives also includes a small, but growing number of collections of personal and professional papers from former presidents, faculty, staff, administrators, Spelman alumnae, and friends of the College.
