Implementation of new interpretive programs for adult audiences in conjunction with a renovated Chicago history gallery, examining Chicago as a cultural, economic, and political crossroads for the nation.

The Chicago Historical Society seeks $300,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support the implementation of New Directions in Adult Education, an innovative adult programming plan designed to engage and educate Chicago’s diverse population. New Directions in Adult Education will be launched in conjunction with the reopening of the museum in Fall 2006 after an extensive eighteen-month renovation to transform the museum and its exhibitions. Programming provides unique opportunities to broaden and deepen public engagement with humanities themes. The five program formats that comprise New Directions in Adult Education will highlight content relating to people, experiences, places, and events in greater depth, and will offer this content in a variety of formats and locations. By exploring history through personal discovery and multiple perspectives, programming can appeal to diverse audiences across a range of learning styles and interests.
