Planning for interpretive tours of the historic Oakland Cemetery using "augmented reality" technology designed for use on smart phones and personal digital assistants.

The New Media Center and Augmented Environments Lab in the Georgia Institute of Technology are seeking funds for the planning of a location-based experience in the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia, the city?s oldest and historically most important cemetery. Oakland is a remarkable resource for exploring the history of Atlanta and the South, and this resource is currently underutilized by the Atlanta community and by visitors to the city. We believe that through the use of appropriate technology and careful historical research we can fashion a narrative experience far more compelling than a conventional tour. We expect that our project will enrich the experience of current visitors and encourage new audiences to visit the cemetery. The project should help to make Oakland into the premier cultural tourist attraction that it can be. Our project will also serve as a model for location-based experiences that can be applied to sites throughout the United States.
