Long-Term Research Fellowships at the Hagley Museum and Library

FAIN: RA-234950-16

Hagley Museum and Library (Wilmington, DE 19807-2106)
Roger Horowitz (Project Director: August 2015 to March 2021)

12 months of stipend support (1-3 fellowships) per year for three years and a contribution to defray costs associated with the selection of fellows.

We propose creating postdoctoral fellowships that we would call the “Hagley Postdoctoral Fellowship on Business, Culture, and Society.” Our targeted applicant pool is the large and expanding array of scholars who use records generated by business to explore the impact of firms on our nation, and indeed the world. Similar postdoctoral fellowships for scholars trained in the humanities do not exist anywhere in the United States. We are in constant contact with these scholars through our current extensive grant programs and our role as the administrative center for the Business History Conference, the principal academic organization for scholarly research pertaining to firms and their influence on our society. Author: Roger Horowitz
Abstract: The “Commercial Pictures and the Arts and Technics of Visual Persuasion” conference will convene an international group of scholars concerned with the power of pictures in the world of commerce. As pictures became a central feature of the advertising message in the second half of the nineteenth century, they migrated from the pages of newspapers and magazines, and the posters on the sides of buildings, to such technologies as electrical spectaculars, film, and later, television. At the heart of this diffusion was an effort to make the pictorial sales message migrate not only across media but also into the minds of consumers. This conference is part of a two-year initiative on commercial pictures and the art of visual persuasion organized by Jennifer Greenhill (Associate Professor of Art History, USC), Vanessa Schwartz (Professor of Art History and History and Director of the Visual Studies Research Institute, USC), and Alex Taylor (Assistant Professor and Academic Curator, University of Pittsburgh). Roger Horowitz, Director of Hagley’s Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society, will join the program committee of this conference.

Surveillance archive: using reports in business history (Article)
Title: Surveillance archive: using reports in business history
Author: Sean Vanatta
Abstract: In a narrow sense, this essay is meant to encourage business historians to consider (and reconsider) the variety of public and private reports, which can provide insights into the operation of firms and industries. U.S. bank examiner reports tell us about how nineteenth century banks operated within a Republican political economy; European Union reports shine light on the differences and similarities between firms operating in various national markets and their relationship to increased economic integration; equity analyst reports present a forensic financial analysis while also revealing a company’s history. More broadly, this essay is also an invitation to reflect on reports as a nexus of surveillance and power. Indeed, such paperwork is power (the tricky bit is figuring out just what sort of power it is, and who wields it).

Plastic Capitalism: Banks, Credit Cards and the End of Financial Control (Book)
Title: Plastic Capitalism: Banks, Credit Cards and the End of Financial Control
Author: Sean Vanatta
Abstract: America’s consumer debt machine was not inevitable. In the years after World War II, state and federal regulations ensured that many Americans enjoyed safe banks and inexpensive credit. Bankers, though, grew restless amid restrictive rules that made profits scarce. They experimented with new services and new technologies. They settled on credit cards, and in the 1960s mailed out reams of high-interest plastic to build a debt industry from scratch. In the 1960s and ’70s consumers fought back, using federal and state policy to make credit cards safer and more affordable. But bankers found ways to work around local rules. Beginning in 1980, Citibank and its peers relocated their card plans to South Dakota and Delaware, states with the weakest consumer regulations, creating “on-shore” financial havens and drawing consumers into an exploitative credit economy over which they had little control.
