Scandal of Colonial Rule: Power and Subversion in the British Atlantic during the Age of Revolution (Book)
Title: Scandal of Colonial Rule: Power and Subversion in the British Atlantic during the Age of Revolution
Author: James Epstein
Abstract: In 1806 General Thomas Picton, Britain's first governor of Trinidad, was brought to trial for the torture of a free mulatto named Louisa Calderon and for overseeing a regime of terror over the island's slave population. James Epstein offers an account of the unfolding of this colonial drama. He shows the ways in which the trial and its investigation brought empire 'home' and exposed the disjuncture between a national self-image of humane governance and the brutal realities of colonial rule. He uses the trial to open up a range of issues, including colonial violence and norms of justice, the status of the British subject, imperial careering, visions of development after slavery, slave conspiracy and the colonial archive. He reveals how Britain's imperial regime became more authoritarian, hierarchical and militarized but also how unease about abuses of power and of the rights of colonial subjects began to grow.

Writing Captivity in the Early Modern Atlantic: Circulations of Knowledge and Authority in the Iberian and English Imperial Worlds (Book)
Title: Writing Captivity in the Early Modern Atlantic: Circulations of Knowledge and Authority in the Iberian and English Imperial Worlds
Author: Lisa Voigt
Abstract: Drawing on texts written by and about European and Euro-American captives in a variety of languages and genres, Lisa Voigt explores the role of captivity in the production of knowledge, identity, and authority in the early modern imperial world. Voigt demonstrates how the flexible identities of captives complicate clear-cut national, colonial, and religious distinctions. Using fictional and nonfictional, canonical and little-known works about captivity in Europe, North Africa, and the Americas, Voigt exposes the circulation of texts, discourses, and peoples across cultural borders and in both directions across the Atlantic.

From Deficit to Deluge : The Origins of the French Revolution (Book)
Title: From Deficit to Deluge : The Origins of the French Revolution
Author: Kaiser, Thomas E.
Author: Kley, Dale K. Van
Abstract: From Deficit to Deluge takes stock of shifts in scholarly investigation of the origins of French Revolution. During the last decade, scholars have moved beyond "revisionist" historians of the 1970s, who highlighted the monarchy's degeneration into despotism, to explore related conflicts in the realms of finance, social relations, religion, diplomacy, the Enlightenment, and colonial policy. In this book, seven established authorities explore some of these critical intersections, and together they make clear the role that unresolved tensions in these realms played in the essentially political narrative told by post-Marxian revisionist historiography.

Robert R. Palmer’s Catholics and Unbelievers in Eighteenth-Century France: An Overdue Tribute (Book Section)
Title: Robert R. Palmer’s Catholics and Unbelievers in Eighteenth-Century France: An Overdue Tribute
Author: Kley, Dale K. Van
Editor: Sanja Perovic
Abstract: The opposition between ‘religion' and ‘modernity' has long held the status of a self-evident truth. Recently, however, there has been a growing realization that religion has not died out and may be more compatible with modern society than previously assumed. This development is particularly striking in France where laïcité has long been the official doctrine. How did religion become opposed to the secular and modern? If distinctions between sacred and secular are less adequate than commonly believed, how do these two categories interact?Addressing these questions, this book explores the persistence of religious categories on the cultural landscape of early modern France. France was the birthplace of Europe's first secular state and the centre of two movements considered indispensable to secularization - the Enlightenment and Revolution of 1789. As such France is vital for understanding how religious antecedents informed modern political institutions and ideals. By uncovering the role of religion in shaping categories most often associated with modernity this book offers a new perspective on the master narrative of secularization.

Jansenism and the International Suppression of the Jesuits (Book Section)
Title: Jansenism and the International Suppression of the Jesuits
Author: Kley, Dale K. Van
Editor: Stewart J Brown
Editor: Timothy Tackett
Abstract: During the tumultuous period of world history from 1660 to 1815, three complex movements combined to bring a fundamental cultural reorientation to Europe and North America, and ultimately to the wider world. The Enlightenment transformed views of nature and of the human capacity to master nature. The religious reawakenings brought a revival of heart-felt, experiential Christianity. Finally revolution, the political and social upheavals of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, challenged established ideas of divine-right monarchies and divinely ordained social hierarchies, and promoted more democratic government, notions of human rights and religious toleration. A new religious climate emerged, in which people were more likely to look to their own feelings and experiences for the basis of their faith. During this same period, Christianity spread widely around the world as a result of colonialism and missions, and responded in diverse ways to its encounters with other cultures and religious traditions.

Piety and Politics in the Century of Lights (Book Section)
Title: Piety and Politics in the Century of Lights
Author: Kley, Dale K. Van
Editor: Robert Wokler
Editor: Mark Goldie
Abstract: This major work of academic reference provides a comprehensive overview of the development of western political thought during the European enlightenment. Written by a distinguished team of international contributors, this Cambridge History is the latest in a sequence of volumes that is now firmly established as the principal reference source for the history of political thought. Every major theme in eighteenth-century political thought is covered in a series of essays at once scholarly and accessible, and the essays are complemented by extensive guides for further reading, and brief biographical notes of the major characters in the text, including Rousseau, Montesquieu and David Hume. Of interest and relevance to students and scholars of politics and history at all levels from beginning undergraduate upwards, this volume chronicles one of the most exciting and rewarding of all periods in the development of western thinking about politics, man (and increasingly woman), and society.

Reading the Allegorical Intertext: Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton. (Book)
Title: Reading the Allegorical Intertext: Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton.
Author: Anderson, Judith
Abstract: dith H. Anderson conceives the intertext as a relation between or among texts that encompasses both Kristevan intertextuality and traditional relationships of influence, imitation, allusion, and citation. Like the Internet, the intertext is a state, or place, of potential expressed in ways ranging from deliberate emulation to linguistic free play. Relatedly, the intertext is also a convenient fiction that enables examination of individual agency and sociocultural determinism. Anderson’s intertext is allegorical because Spenser’s Faerie Queene is pivotal to her study and because allegory, understood as continued or moving metaphor, encapsulates, even as it magnifies, the process of signification. Her title signals the variousness of an intertext extending from Chaucer through Shakespeare to Milton and the breadth of allegory itself. Literary allegory, in Anderson’s view, is at once a mimetic form and a psychic one—a process thinking that combines mind with matter, emblem with narrative, abstraction with history.

Imperial Celebrations, Local Triumphs: Festival Accounts in the Portuguese Empire (Article)
Title: Imperial Celebrations, Local Triumphs: Festival Accounts in the Portuguese Empire
Author: Voigt, Lisa
Abstract: This article analyzes festival accounts describing the ceremonial entries of Philip III into Lisbon in 1619 and of Bishop Manoel da Cruz into Mariana, Minas Gerais (Brazil), in 1749. The article compares the rhetorical strategies used to shift the object of celebration from the arriving dignitary to the city and its inhabitants. While the festive entries signal the power of a centralizing authority over local space, the festival accounts' authors seek to respond to the geographic, political, and cultural marginality with which their city has been ascribed. They do so by strategically deploying and redefining the very sign of their peripheral relationship to the geopolitical center: the use of the Spanish language in the case of the 1619 Lisbon entries, and the emphasis on distance and remoteness in the Brazilian festival account of 1749. The analysis reveals the role played by imperial locations in the articulation of local pride.

Abstract: This article addresses the use of public festivals and their written descriptions for the purpose of asserting patriotic pride in an American city and extolling its creole inhabitants, particularly in contradistinction to peninsular "forasteros," whose disdain and discrimination the creoles experienced in different ways, not only with respect to their festive competence.

Author: Cohen, Matthew

Abstract: Long before the Boston Tea Party, where colonists staged a revolutionary act by masquerading as Indians, people looked to Native Americans for the symbols, imagery, and acts that showed what it meant to be "American." And for just as long, observers have largely overlooked the role that Native peoples themselves played in creating and enacting the Indian performances appropriated by European Americans.

Title: Scrutinizing Early Modern Warfare in Latin Hexameters: The Austrias Carmen of Joannes Latinus (Juan Latino)
Author: Wright, Elizabeth
Editor: Leah Middlebrook
Editor: Anthony J. Cascardi
Abstract: This broad-ranging exploration argues that there was a special preoccupation with the nature and limits of poetry in early modern Spain and Europe, as well as especially vigorous poetic activity in this period. Contrary to what one might read in Hegel, the "prosification" of the world has remained an unfinished affair.

From Drake to Draque: A Spanish Hero with an English Accent (Book Section)
Title: From Drake to Draque: A Spanish Hero with an English Accent
Author: Wright, Elizabeth
Editor: Anne J. Cruz
Abstract: Separated only by a narrow body of water, Spain and England have had a long history of material and cultural interactions; but this intertwined history is rarely perceived by scholars of one country with a view toward the other. Through their analyses of the various modes of exchange of material goods and the circulation of symbolic systems of meaning, the contributors to the anthology-historians and literary critics-investigate, for the first time, the two nations' express points of contact and conflict during these historically crucial fifty years. Focusing on the half-century period that began with the marriage of Mary Tudor to Prince Philip of Spain, and spanned the reigns of Philip II and Elizabeth I of England, the essays in this anthology demonstrate and problematize, from the perspective of Spanish cultural history, the significant material, cultural, and symbolic contacts between the two countries. The volume shows how the two countries' alliances and clashes, which led to the debacle of the 'Invincible Armada' of 1588 and continued for decades afterwards, held enormous historical significance by shaping the religious, political, and cultural developments of the modern world.

“Lazy, Improvident People”: Myth and Reality in the Writing of Spanish History (Book)
Title: “Lazy, Improvident People”: Myth and Reality in the Writing of Spanish History
Author: MacKay, Ruth
Abstract: Since the early modern era, historians and observers of Spain, both within the country and beyond it, have identified a peculiarly Spanish disdain for work, especially manual labor, and have seen it as a primary explanation for that nation's alleged failure to develop like the rest of Europe. In "Lazy, Improvident People," the historian Ruth MacKay examines the origins of this deeply ingrained historical prejudice and cultural stereotype. MacKay finds these origins in the ilustrados, the Enlightenment intellectuals and reformers who rose to prominence in the late eighteenth century. To advance their own, patriotic project of rationalization and progress, they disparaged what had gone before. Relying in part on late medieval and early modern political treatises about "vile and mechanical" labor, they claimed that previous generations of Spaniards had been indolent and backward. Through a close reading of the archival record, MacKay shows that such treatises and dramatic literature in no way reflected the actual lives of early modern artisans, who were neither particularly slothful nor untalented. On the contrary, they behaved as citizens, and their work was seen as dignified and essential to the common good. MacKay contends that the ilustrados' profound misreading of their own past created a propagandistic myth that has been internalized by subsequent intellectuals. MacKay's is thus a book about the notion of Spanish exceptionalism, the ways in which this notion developed, and the burden and skewed vision it has imposed on Spaniards and outsiders. "Lazy, Improvident People" will fascinate not only historians of early modern and modern Spain but all readers who are concerned with the process by which historical narratives are formed, reproduced, and given authority.

Ingenuous Subjection: Compliance and Power in the Eighteenth-Century Domestic Novel (Book)
Title: Ingenuous Subjection: Compliance and Power in the Eighteenth-Century Domestic Novel
Author: Thompson, Helen
Abstract: Helen Thompson's Ingenuous Subjection offers a new feminist history of the eighteenth-century domestic novel. By reading social contract theory alongside representations of the domestic sphere by authors such as Mary Astell, Mary Davys, Samuel Richardson, Eliza Haywood, and Frances Sheridan, Thompson shows how these writers confront women's paradoxical status as both contractual agents and naturally subject wives. Over the long eighteenth century, Thompson argues, domestic novelists appropriated the standard of political modernity advanced by John Locke and others as a citizen's free or "ingenuous" assent to the law. The domestic novel figures feminine political difference not as women's deviation from an abstract universal but rather as their failure freely or ingenuously to submit to the power retained by Enlightenment husbands.

Hobbesian Obligation and the Durability of Romance in Aphra Behn’s Love-Letters (Book Section)
Title: Hobbesian Obligation and the Durability of Romance in Aphra Behn’s Love-Letters
Author: Thompson, Helen
Editor: Jennie Batchelor
Editor: Cora Kaplan
Abstract: Women and Material Culture presents a collection of twelve illustrated and interdisciplinary essays on gender and material culture across the long eighteenth century. Written by scholars from the USA, the UK and Europe, these essays point to the manifold ways in which gender mediated and was shape by the consumption and production of consumable goods (from clothing and artworks to books) and elucidate the complex and shifting relationships between material and social practice in the period. The study of material objects and their visual and textual representation reminds us that the meanings of objects - like the meaning of gender - are neither monolithic nor stable. Women and Material Culture explores some of the many ways in which women across eighteenth-century Europe actively participated in the social production of meaning through the consumption, creation and deployment of material artefacts.

Montaigne, Lear, and the Question of Afterlife (Book Section)
Title: Montaigne, Lear, and the Question of Afterlife
Author: Hoffmann, George
Editor: Jean-Pierre Maguin
Editor: Pierre Kapitaniak
Abstract: Holding his dead daughter, old Lear suddenly believes he sees something given to none of this life to behold; “Look, her lips, / Look there, look there,” he vainly bids the other players, as Cordelia’s soul, heaven bound, issues from her limp body. In making these a dying madman’s words, however, Shakespeare invites his audience to consider rather the fact that we see nothing, and thus to reflect upon the gaping void that seems to lie between Christian promises of salvation and the play’s depiction of a bleak, inhospitable universe. Thirty years earlier, Montaigne staged this same scene, to much the same effect, in his essay “Of exercise,” casting himself not only in the roles of both Lear and Cordelia, but also in that of the duly skeptical spectator. This paper seeks to situate these two ambiguous stagings of the Christian “death” in a wider social context of popular anxiety about salvation and native skepticism over the immortality of the soul. It argues that Montaigne purposely evokes a tradition of heterodoxical responses to the problem of death beginning with the second chapter of the Wisdom of Solomon and stretching to Anabaptism. Instead of a Christian afterlife, Montaigne intimates that his spirit will live on not in his resurrected body but in a mummy, “I expose myself entire: my portrait is a cadaver on which the veins, the muscles, and the tendons appear at a glance (Frame, 274), the mummy, then, of his book, tightly bound in dried pigskin.

France's First Revolution: Hamlet and the "Unresolved Man" of 1589 (Book Section)
Title: France's First Revolution: Hamlet and the "Unresolved Man" of 1589
Author: Hoffmann, George
Editor: James Day
Editor: Buford Norman
Abstract: In 1589, Paris experienced an unprecedented wave of fanaticism. Outraged at the king's Christmas assassination of the Guise brothers, the city revolted against the crown and was swept with nearly daily religious processions. But despite Denis Crouzet's compelling account of the millennial and apocalyptic tendencies driving the movement, examination of the Holy League's rhetoric reveals a powerful counter-current that quickly drew writers back to the calmer waters of common sense. Having become preoccupied with the moderate "Politiques," whom they sought to caricature through the figure of the Unresolved Man, Leaguers found themselves forced to mimic the rhetoric of their asymmetrical opponent. Through Matthieu's Guisiade and Marlowe's Edward II, the Unresolved Man of these pamphlets stands as a direct ancestor of Hamlet and the modern, "undecided" subject.

Title: Reforming French Culture: Satire, Spiritual Alienation, & Connection to Strangers
Author: George Hoffmann
Abstract: Rather than using literature to illustrate history, or contextualizing literature through historical background, this book brings literary understanding (what satire is and what it does) to bear on historical understanding. Situated at the crossroads of religion, literature, and cultural history, it explores how France, in this period, became a culturally Protestant country while remaining confessionally Catholic.
