ACLS/SSRC/NEH International and Area Studies Fellowship Program

FAIN: RA-50048-07

American Council of Learned Societies Devoted to Humanistic Studies (New York, NY 10017-6706)
Saul Fisher (Project Director: September 2006 to March 2009)
Nicole A Stahlmann (Project Director: March 2009 to March 2012)

The equivalent of four fellowships a year for three years.

This proposal seeks funding from the NEH for the period July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2011 to support the program of ACLS/SSRC/NEH Fellowships in International and Area Studies. The ACLS has successfully administered this and predecessor programs since 1978. The program is integrated into the central ACLS fellowship competition, since multi-disciplinary research characterizes not only area studies but much work in the humanities in general; area studies scholarship benefits from evaluation in this larger context. Integration of the programs maximizes the number of NEH Fellows, who are supported both by grant funds and by ACLS endowment funds. The program offers 15 fellowships a year to post-doctoral scholars in all disciplines of the humanities working on Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, East Europe, and the former Soviet Union.

Subjects in Difference: Walter Benjamin, Frantz Fanon, and Postcolonial Theory (Article)
Title: Subjects in Difference: Walter Benjamin, Frantz Fanon, and Postcolonial Theory
Author: Zahid R. Chaudary
Abstract: This essay aims to rethink historical difference in light of Walter Benjamin’s formulation of mimesis and Frantz Fanon’s phenomenology of difference. Divided into three parts, the essay engages Dipesh Chakrabarty’s account of historical difference, considers how an understanding of mimesis might safeguard against some of the philosophical pitfalls within Chakrabarty’s formulation, and revisits Fanon for an explication of a theory of mimesis and difference that may be the grounds for a renewed understanding of historical difference. The essay makes a case for the relevance of Frankfurt School dialectics for postcolonial problematics.

Creolization and Contraband: Curaçao in the Early Modern Atlantic World (Book)
Title: Creolization and Contraband: Curaçao in the Early Modern Atlantic World
Author: Linda M. Rupert
Abstract: When Curaçao came under Dutch control in 1634, the small island off South America’s northern coast was isolated and sleepy. The introduction of increased trade (both legal and illegal) led to a dramatic transformation, and Curaçao emerged as a major hub within Caribbean and wider Atlantic networks. It would also become the commercial and administrative seat of the Dutch West India Company in the Americas. The island’s main city, Willemstad, had a non-Dutch majority composed largely of free blacks, urban slaves, and Sephardic Jews, who communicated across ethnic divisions in a new creole language called Papiamentu. For Linda M. Rupert, the emergence of this creole language was one of the two defining phenomena that gave shape to early modern Curaçao. The other was smuggling. Both developments, she argues, were informal adaptations to life in a place that was at once polyglot and regimented. They were the sort of improvisations that occurred wherever expanding European empires thrust different peoples together. Creolization and Contraband uses the history of Curaçao to develop the first book-length analysis of the relationship between illicit interimperial trade and processes of social, cultural, and linguistic exchange in the early modern world. Rupert argues that by breaking through multiple barriers, smuggling opened particularly rich opportunities for cross-cultural and interethnic interaction. Far from marginal, these extra-official exchanges were the very building blocks of colonial society.
