The equivalent of two fellowships a year for three years.

The ASCSA seeks a total of $258,000 for a three-year program to continue support of two to four fellowships per year of five to ten months in duration, in a wide range of disciplines of the Greek world from prehistory to the present. The NEH Fellowship program aims to make the unique resources of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens accessible to a wider scholarly constituency: Blegen Library, devoted to Greek antiquity; the Gennadius Library, a collection of post-ancient Greek culture; and the primary materials accessible at the ASCSA's archaeological research centers in ancient Corinth and at the Athenian Agora. NEH Fellows add immensely to the intellectual life of the School, broadening and enriching the experience of students and scholars in the ASCSA community.

Abstract: This study focuses on the “saucer pyres,” a series of 70 deposits excavated in the residential and industrial areas bordering the Athenian Agora. Each consisted of a shallow pit, its floor sometimes marked by heavy burning, with a votive deposit of pottery and fragments of burnt bone, ash, and charcoal. Most of the pots were miniatures (including the eponymous saucers) but a few larger vessels were found, along with offerings associated with funerary cult. The deposits represent a largely Athenian phenomenon, with few parallels elsewhere. When first found in the 1930s, the deposits were interpreted as baby burials. Recent zooarchaeological analysis of the bones, however, reveals that they are the remains of sheep and goats, and that the deposits were sacrificial rather than funerary. The present study investigates the nature of those sacrifices, taking into account the contents of the pyres, their spatial distribution, and their relationship to buildings around the Agora and elsewhere. In light of a strong correlation between pyres and industrial activity, the author argues that the pyres document workplace rituals designed to protect artisans and their enterprises.

Abstract: The ?aµat???, a collection of seven short epigrams about healing grouped together and so labelled in the Milan papyrus attributed to Posidippus, present another useful source of information about the cult and cures of Asclepius (AB 95–101; P Mil. Vogl. VIII 309, XIV.30–XV.22). Brief though the epigrams are (all are four lines in length except the first, which is eight lines), they accord well with the picture of the cult presented by material, epigraphic and other literary evidence.
