The equivalent of four twelve-month fellowships a year for three years.
This proposal seeks funding from the NEH for the period July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2014 to support the ACLS fellowship program, American Research in the Humanities in China (ARHC). We have successfully administered this program since 1995, providing scholars with access to archives and other collections in China, and nurturing collegiality among U.S. scholars and their Chinese counterparts. The ARHC program deepens American understanding of China. No other national fellowship program focuses exclusively on humanities research in China. No other organization could do it as well as ACLS, because of the combination of our record of achievement in China studies, our expertise in designing and administering national fellowship competitions, and finally, because of the competence of our representative office in Beijing in helping U.S. scholars navigate the practical difficulties and bureaucratic obstacles of working in China.

Abstract: Weiqi, often referred to as "Go" in English, is arguably the most important game in East Asia, with an estimated thirty million to fifty million players throughout the world. Weiqi is a board game immersed in more vivid and often contradictory cultural metaphors than any other game in the world. As Chinese politics have changed over the last two millennia, so too has the imagery of the game—from a tool to seek religious enlightenment to military metaphors, one of the noble four arts, one of the condemned “four olds”, nationalism, transnationalism, historical elitism, and futuristic hyper rationality.
The filmmaker interviews people in China in settings ranging from children's schools to China's elite Beijing University to a park where retired working class men gather to play, from child educators to those reminiscing about their own youth during the Cultural Revolution. What emerges is a fascinating cultural study as people discuss children's education, retirement, China forty years ago and today.

Abstract: Go (Weiqi in Chinese) is one of the most popular games in East Asia, with a steadily increasing fan base around the world. Both chess and Go are logic games, but Go is much older, with written records that mention the game dating back to the fourth century B.C. As Chinese politics have changed over the past two millennia, so too has the imagery of the game. In Imperial China, it was seen as a tool to seek religious enlightenment and was one of the four noble arts that were requisite for becoming a cultured gentleman. During the Cultural Revolution, it was a stigmatized emblem of the lasting effects of feudalism. Today, it marks the reemergence of cultured gentlemen as an idealized model of manhood. Moskowitz explores the history of the game and provides a snapshot of Chinese Go players today. Go Nation uses this game to reach a better understanding of Chinese masculinity, nationalism, and class as China reconfigures its history and traditions to meet the future.

Abstract: One of the most violent episodes of China's Boxer Uprising was the Taiyuan Massacre of 1900, in which rebels killed foreign missionaries and thousands of Chinese Christians. This sustained scholarly account of the uprising to focus on Shanxi Province illuminates the religious and cultural beliefs on both sides of the conflict and shows how they came to clash.
Anthony Clark highlights the roles of Franciscan nuns and their counterparts among the Boxers -the Red Lantern girls- to argue that women's involvement was integral on both sides of the conflict. Drawing on rich archival records and intertwining religious history with political, cultural, and environmental factors, Clark provides a fresh perspective on a pivotal encounter between China and the West.

Abstract: Assembling recent archaeological evidence and previously overlooked historical sources, Hong explores new elements in the cultural and religious lives of middle-period Chinese. Rather than treat theatrical tomb images as visual documents of early theater, she calls attention to two largely ignored and interlinked aspects: their complex visual forms and their symbolic roles in the mortuary context in which they were created and used. She introduces carefully selected examples that show visual and conceptual novelty in engendering and engaging dimensions of space within and beyond the tomb in specifically theatrical terms. These reveal surprising insights into the intricate relationship between the living and the dead. The overarching sense of theatricality conveys a densely socialized vision of death. Unlike earlier modes of representation in funerary art, which favored cosmological or ritual motifs and maintained a clear dichotomy between the two worlds, these visual practices show a growing interest in conceptualizing the sphere of the dead within the existing social framework. By materializing a "social turn," this remarkable phenomenon constitutes a tangible symptom of middle-period Chinese attempting to socialize the sacred realm.
