To support a three-year excavation at the early Indus Valley city of Harappa, Pakistan, in order to investigate the history of the settlement from about 3300 B.C. to the present.
The proposed project will focus on the origin and development of craft technologies and writing in the period preceding the emergence of Harappa as a major urban center of the Indus Valley Civilization. It will result in a more comprehensive model for the development of writing along with other new techno9logies during the critical period of transition to urbanism, between 2800 and 2600 BC. New excavations will focus on areas of the site where large samples of craft indicators and inscribed objects can be recovered from pre-urban occupation levels. Contextual and chronological analysis, formal and stylistic studies, iconological studies, and technological analysis will be conducted. This research will be of considerable interest to scholars studying early urbanism, technological change, the origins of writing, state level society, and "world" economic systems.
