One-volume history of Virginia, including role of Negro and history of Scotch-Irish and Germans in western Virginia, aspects often overlooked by historians. ABSTRACT: One-volume history of Virginia. Will outline Negro's role, heretofore ignored or misrepresented by white historians; include history of Scotch-Irish and German in western Virginia, other historian mainly concerned with English and Tidewater Virginia. National importance in reporting more completely and accurately a major segment of our national history that has often been distorted or incorrectly reported. Virginia's role in early American history central birthplace of large number of early American statesmen, generals, etc. More accurate data on role of Negro should have great value in promoting better race understanding. Grantee former Pulitzer Prize winning editor of Richmond Times-Dispatch. His stature and reputation in Virginia give weight to his views there in South and could have significant political and intellectual results. Funds for travel, secretarial assistance and supplies in connection with completion of book for publication (research largely completed). Doubleday anxious to publish.
