Definitive study of design processes used from 800 to 1460 AD based in part on study of 2000+ unpublished designs, discovered by PI, for the construction of Gothic cathedrals, civic structures and laying out of town squares. ABSTRACT: Definitive study of design processes used from 800 to 1460 AD based in part on study of 2000+ unpublished designs, discovered by PI, for the construction of Gothic cathedrals, civic structures and laying out of town squares. Include plans and elevations submitted to building committees, sketches and lodge books dealing with modular planning, prefabrication and rotational projection. Our knowledge of middle ages architectural practice based primarily on gothic texts, some earlier buildings accounts and handful of drawings that survived. A careful analysis of these new finds will delineate the working methods of architects and builders--master mason and his colleagues--who were more solidly grounded in practical, logical design considerations than many critics have given them credit for in the past. Simple modular systems of the masons, social aspects of planning (guild system, citizens' councils, competitions, expropriations) bear great resemblance to problems facing 20th century communities. Study will affect our understanding of past community design problems. Bucher was active in Princeton project on Medieval Architectural Engineering. NEH No. H69-0-120.
