ABSTRACT: Project to complete research for critical biography of Nevil Shute Norway (1899-1960) who wrote 23 novels as "Nevil Shute." Norway's novels interesting not only as fiction, but as fictional and mythic treatments of science and technology. As an engineer and aircraft corporation executive, he had an uncommon vantage-point on the impact of modern technology--especially that of flight--upon society. Repeated themes of social responsibility, social mobility, and social, religious, racial and intellectual tolerance in his work. PI promised access to Norway's papers by widow, literary executrix. Study to be published in Twayne English Authors Series. Funds for travel to England and Australia to interview Norway's friends and associates, to examine his correspondence and other papers. PI's salary.
