Project to prepare monograph, Attitudes toward Color in North Africa: The Graeco-Roman Background, based on assumption that Graeco-Roman attitudes towards Blacks and attitudes towards Black in societies influenced by classical tradition present striking similarities. ABSTRACT: Project to prepare monograph, Attitudes toward Color in North Africa: The Graeco-Roman Background, based on assumption that Graeco-Roman attitudes towards Blacks and attitudes towards Blacks in societies influenced by classical tradition present striking similarities. Follow-up to PI's Blacks in Antiquity: Ethiopians in Graeco-Roman Experience. Study will probe literary, epigraphical, numismatic and archeological sources and will use pertinent anthropological and sociological findings. Three months' study and travel in North Africa to research classical monuments depicting Black peoples and to study aspects of contemporary North Africa as basis for comparison of ancient and modern attitudes towards color. Will lead to greater understanding of sources and basis for color attitudes. Funds for 2-month summer salary; travel, per diem for 3 months in Africa.
