Archeological investigation and reconstruction of the architectural history of the House of Sallust in Pompeii.

Project to conduct series of test trenches with staff especially trained for this type of research in order to establish entire building history of the house of Sallust in Pompeii. ABSTRACT: Study of Pompeian First Style wall paintings (NEH Fellowship H68-I-189) led to test excavations below floors in House of Sallust to substantiate theories of Pompeian wall decorations and yielded evidence that foundation date and original plan of most important Pompeian house excavated to date are earlier and more complex than previously know. Present project to continue series of test trenches with staff specially trained for this type of research in order to establish entire building history and answer pertinent questions of dates, water supply and house plan. Reconstruction plans also included. By tracing building's history, fundamental contributions made to study of history of domestic architecture in Italy and to urban development of Pompeii, the most nearly complete city preserved from ancient world. Funds for salaries, labor wages, travel, maintenance, equipment.
