Systematic analysis of the Early Dynastic potter from the site of al-Hibba in Iraq. ABSTRACT: Systematic analysis of the Early Dynastic pottery rom the site of al-Hibba in Iraq, based on technological analysis of the ceramics, a comparative and chronological study of related materials, and a comparison of the modern use of similar containers to those used in ancient Sumerian times (2nd millenium, BC). Al-Hibba the only site in Iraq where extensive series of Early Dynastic pottery has been excavated in a stratified context. Period inadequately analyzed. Pottery made and used at a critical time in man's social development, that of the ancient beginnings of urban developments. Attempt to be made to assess role of each type of vessel in material culture and general life of people who produced it. In al-Hibba, where there has been little change in the basic needs of local communities, role of containers in modern village life should prove especially illuminating. Pottery is an important indicator of cultural change. Study aimed also at truly comprehensive system of pottery classification, usable by archeologists in the field, that would lead to the increased usefulness of pottery finds as diagnostic tools in the reconstruction of ancient societies.
