Examination of Veblen as a philospher. ABSTRACT: Veblen's graduate field was philosophy, his PhD dissertation was on Kant, and his social criticism turned on questions of fundamental value. He is seldom examined as a pholospher, nor have his economic contributions been examined in any extended form in the light of his basic philosophical commitments. He was an extraordinary mind and a remarkable social critic whose insights with regard to institutional structure in economics, government, education, international affairs, etc. are timely and affect thinking today. Project to complete research on book-length manuscript dealing with Veblen's philosophy. Chapter titles: Veblen's Relation to the Pragmatic Movenment, Veblen vs. Marxian Materialsim, Veblen's Contribution to Economic Thought, The Nature and Unity of Veblen's Thought, etc. Fund for summer stipend, travel, indirect costs.
