John W. Dower (Project Director: June 1972 to present)

To examine the career of Yoshida Shigeru and the Japanese Experience, 1878-1954. The project will address the overall problem of continuities and discontinuities between prewar and postwar Japan. Focus here will be on the post-1945 period and build on research already substantially completed concerning Yoshida's prewar role in empire-building, relations with the west, war opposition, anti-communism, and defense of the emperor system.
