Robert H. Kargon (Project Director: September 1972 to present)

To examine the structure and development of the men and institutions forming the scientific community of Victorian Britain's most important industrial city--Manchester. The study will delineate the internal and external forces which shaped the community in the years 1840-1900, particularly those of urban requirements, public health, and science-based industry.
