Robert E. Longacre (Project Director: August 1974 to present)

To prepare materials for study of discourse in folk literatures in aboriginal languages of Columbia, Panama and Ecuador. The study of discourse and of the notional/cognitive categories which underlie discourse is a growing edge of contemporary linguistics -- which is no longer a narrow specialty but a discipline exploring basic questions concerning human nature. Language study will include languages of the world. This project which will take place in Lomalinda, Columbia^ will include people who have a unique experience of long-term exposure to out-of-the-way languages.
