To excavate several types of gardens of the ancient Roman cities or Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. Because of the intimate relation of the garden to architecture, painting5aesthetic expression, religion, horticulture, economics, and city planning, this study of the hundreds of gardens preserved by Vesuvius yields new insights on many aspects of Roman life.
