To edit the diaries, correspondence, annotated sales catalogues, and collections of photographs of works of art belonging to Samuel P. Avery (1822 - 1904), a pioneer dealer and important influence on American taste and art collecting. The edited archival material will provide an opportunity to trace economic and social history through a representative group of Realist works painted in the latter half of the 19th Century.
