To study the 1976 Republican convention regarding two questions central to the normative and empirical theory of two-party democracy representation and legitimation. Each party has a distinctive consultative or representational style - Burkean for the Republicans and Madisonian for the Democrats - with consequences for legitimation and popular consent.
