To study the social processes by which some groups of painters attain social recognition while other groups of their contemporaries do not. The study will analyze the strategies employed by each group in order to gain legitimization of the central art establishment. Grantee hypothesizes that the strategies employed by "successful" groups are qualitatively different from those employed by "unsuccessful” groups.
