To implement a project commenced under an NEH planning grant. The project is a long-term study of the recruitment, development and character of the American population in its formative years. It has three aims: 1) To combine the techniques of historical demographers and other social analysts with those of traditional historians so as to explore American population history and to publish the results for the general reader; 2) To assess the impact of the American Revolution on the growth and character of American Society' 3) To demonstrate the centrality of humanist considerations in historical study, while making maximum use of quantitative behavioralist data.
