To support a sixth season of archaeological excavation and a systematic surfacesurvey at al-Hiba in Iraq, now known to be the major Sumerian city-state of Lagash. Materials at the site, particularly those from the period 2900-2750 B.C., are considered crucial to an understanding of ancient Sumerian history.
