To support publication of a work that argues that contrapasso, or retribution, is a central concept, philosophically and artistically, in Dante's Hell. Choos-ing five subjects from the Inferno, the author shows how in each case the sin, the sinner, the punishment, and the imagery are joined in an artistic whole.
