Title: Making the Jane Addams's Papers Accessible to New Audiences
Author: Cathy Moran Hajo
Editor: Maurice Hamington
Abstract: Scholars have been the only ones able to easily access primary sources on Jane Addams and her work for social justice, social work, woman suffrage, immigrants, and peace. Over the past forty-five years, the Jane Addams Papers Project has been working to expand the audience for these critical papers. Whether through microfilm, print, or digital publication, the goal has been the same -- to bring Addams's words, ideas and world to a large and varied public. With digital technology we have been able to expand access dramatically in the last five years. The Jane Addams Digital edition offers images of the documents, transcribed to be readable and searchable, indexed by subject and tags, and contextualized with identifications of the people, organizations and events discussed. Our goal is to do more than provide the documents to the public. We are developing tools to encourage creative use of the materials – lesson plans for middle-school students, guides for National History Day projects, and crowdsourcing tools to enable the public to participate in the project. We will continue to expand these offerings as more materials are published and hope to invite scholars, teachers, and students to contribute their analyses to the educational part of the site. By making the data that underlies the edition accessible to digital humanities scholars, we will develop datasets that can be used by open source tools to analyze and interpret the papers. From maps that plot Addams’s correspondence and associates, to social network visualizations and text analyses of her speeches and correspondence, the digital edition will encourage new questions and analysis that would not have been possible a short time ago. We look forward to working with users of all ages and interests in order to bring Jane Addams into the 21st century.
