The Samuel Gompers Papers

FAIN: RQ-50005-03

University of Maryland, College Park (College Park, MD 20742-5141)
Peter J. Albert (Project Director: August 2002 to September 2006)

The completion and publication of volumes 10 and 11 and preparation of volume 12 of an edition of the papers of Samuel Gompers. (24 months)

The Samuel Gompers Project is collecting the papers of Samuel Gompers (1850-1924), publishing a twelve-volume, chronologically arranged, and carefully annotated and indexed printed edition of the most important documents (less than 1 percent of the collection), and producing a microfilm edition of previously unmicrofilmed and unpublished papers. Publication of the Gompers papers is stimulating new scholarship in the fields of working class history and the history of American trade unionism as well as in African-American, women's, immigration, social, and business history. The Project has published eight volumes to date. Volume 9 (1913-17) will be released this winter, and volumes 10 (1917-18) and 11 (1919-21) are in preparation. During the term of this grant, the Project will publish volume 10, finish work on volume 11 and send it to press, complete the documentary selection and begin transcription of our final volume (1922-24), and continue to update our website.
