FAIN: RQ-50029-03

Duke University (Durham, NC 27705-4677)
David R. Sorensen (Project Director: September 2002 to December 2006)

The preparation and publication of volumes 31, 32 and 33 (print and electronic versions) and continued preparation of volume 34 of the Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle, covering the years 1855-1860. (36 months)

Begun in 1970, the Duke-Edinburgh edition of The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle is regarded by biographers, historians, critics, students, and general readers as one of the finest and most comprehensive literary archives of the nineteenth century. Thirty volumes have been published in book form by Duke University Press, and the edition continues to make a decisive impact on Victorian and nineteenth-century studies. The editors hope that its influence will be extended, with printed volumes being published in conjunction with a digital version, which will be available to a larger and more diverse audience on the World Wide Web.
