Publication of Volume 12 and completion of Volume 13 of the Papers of Jefferson Davis. (36 months)

Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was a U.S. congressman, Mexican War hero, secretary of war, and senator, president of the Confederate States of America, author of his wartime memoirs, and one of the most enduring icons of the Lost Cause. An additional Endowment grant will ensure publication of Volumes 12 and 13 of The Papers of Jefferson Davis, the definitive edition of documents by and to Davis. The published volumes comprise an essential research and reference tool for U.S. history during most of the nineteenth century and help illuminate ongoing repercussions from the era of sectionalism, the Civil War, and, in Volumes 12-13, Reconstruction. The project functions as well as the equivalent of a presidential library, bringing together not only Davis documents (his and his wife's), but also a complementary collection of other primary sources, monographs, research materials, newspapers, and maps, all made available to researchers. The project website offers instant access to considerable basic, accurate information about Davis and his times.
