Critical Edition of the Works of Shenoute

FAIN: RQ-50224-06

Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA 23284-9005)
Andrew Todd Crislip (Project Director: November 2005 to December 2010)

A critical edition and translation of the Works of Shenoute. (36 months)

The Critical Edition of the Works of Shenoute will make available to specialists and nonspecialists alike the writings of Shenoute, the greatest author in the history of the Coptic language. An international committee of twelve scholars of Coptic Studies has begun the process of transcribing or collating all of the roughly 3,800 surviving manuscript pages of Shenoute’s works, editing them, and developing modern language translations. Once edited and translated, Shenoute’s Works will open up new vistas for the religious, social, and political history of Late Antiquity.
