Preparation for publication of Volumes 18-22 of the Correspondence Series of the Documentary History of the First Federal Congress and work on digital conversion for online publication. (24 months)

The 1st. Fed. Congress Proj. (FFCP), which is publishing the complete record of the most important and productive Congress in U.S. history in the Documentary History of the First Federal Congress, 1789-1791, is nearing completion. This proposal requests essential funding for work on the last 5 volumes of the Correspondence Series, which will be the culmination of this respected and well reviewed edition. The correspondence and other unofficial documents shed considerable light upon how our nation's founding generation faced and dealt with constitutional and sectional conflicts and reveal much about the evolution of member-constituent relationships, as well as providing ample evidence about how the American people viewed their government. By the grant's end, 2nd Session Correspondence (18-20) will be published, editorial work on the 3rd Session Correspondence (vols. 21-22) should be completed, and electronic conversion of volumes of the DHFFC for Internet publication well underway.
