This is a three-year project which will bring together in a single scholarly digital edition previously published and unpublished materials of Eliza Lucas Pinckney and her daughter Harriott Pinckney Horry. Their letters, diaries, receipt (recipe) books, and other records spanning nearly a century (1739 to 1830) document from the point of view of two observant and articulate South Carolina women the significant political and social events and people of the late colonial and early national period, as well as the everyday concerns and activities of managing households and plantations, and raising families. Eliza Lucas Pinckney is best know for successfully introducing the cultivation of indigo as one of the key staple crops of 18th century coastal Carolina. The edition will use TEI encoding to facilitate access to the documents and will be distributed as a University of Virginia Press publication via Rotunda, its digital imprint.
