Preparation of six volumes of the works of the philosopher Rudolf Carnap (1891-1970). (36 months).

The Collected Works of Rudolf Carnap are being published through the collaborative efforts of a team of distinguished scholars. This proposal supports production of six volumes which require translation of German texts, proofreading and editing of English texts, production of editorial introductions and notes, and technical typesetting. Rudolf Carnap was one of the leading philosophers of the 20th Century. A member of the Vienna Circle, he exerted a strong influence on leading English-speaking philosophers through his long and distinguished career in the U.S. His contributions to philosophy of science, semantics, logic and probability theory helped define the major philosophical problems of his times and set standards of clarity and rigor. Carnap's works include a large number of books and articles originally published in either German or English, and have never been collected in either language. Many are out of print in one or both languages, and many have never been translated.
