Preparation of a print and online edition and translation of inscriptions from the Great Hypostyle Hall in Luxor, Egypt. (36 months)

This project is an ongoing effort to document and publish monumental reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions from the Great Hypostyle Hall at the temple of Karnak, one of the largest monuments ever built in Ancient Egypt. It is covered with hundreds of hieroglyphic texts and pictorial scenes carved in relief on its walls, 134 giant columns and roof, most of which remain unpublished. These inscriptions are vital to reconstructing the history, foreign relations, religion and culture of Ancient Egypt. Our goal is to publish complete editions of inscriptions we have previously recorded in Egypt. These editions will include facsimile drawings, translations of the hieroglyphic texts with commentary, glossaries and photographic documentation. We will publish these texts in books and on our project website. Our publisher, the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, also makes their volumes available as free PDF files online.
