Preparation for publication of volumes 3, 4, and 5 of the planned five volumes of the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers. (36 months)

The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers project, a documentary edition of Eleanor Roosevelt's post-white House writings and public appearances on politics, policy, democracy, and human rights sponsored by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the George Washington University (GWU), the NEH, and other private donors, seeks a three-year grant from the NEH to support the publications of its third, fourth and fifth volumes of a five-volume series in letterpress and electronic format. These funds will allow the Papers to retain the staff necessary to fulfill its commitment to the NEH, its new and traditional media, in a timely and efficient manner. The documents included in these volumes come from 823 collections in 263 archives in nine nations and include audio, video, and graphic material and written text.

Abstract: The 311 documents in this second volume of Eleanor Roosevelt’s papers trace her transformation into one of her era’s most prominent spokespersons for democracy, reveal her ongoing maturation as a political force in her own right, and detail the broader impact she had on American politics, the United Nations, and global affairs. Readers will gain insight into President Truman’s second administration, the UN at the height of the early Cold War, and the many social and political movements that competed for influence over both. Ranging widely in substance and content, Roosevelt’s writings demonstrate a grasp of the intimate connection between domestic and international affairs that led the former first lady to support the Korean War, champion the newly founded state of Israel, demand respect for the civil rights of African Americans, and bolster the political ambitions of people like Adlai Stevenson, Helen Gahagan Douglas, and John F. Kennedy.
