The preparation for print publication of volumes 40-42 of the Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle, and publication of volumes 39-41 in an existing online archive. (36 months)

Begun in 1970, the Duke-Edinburgh edition of The Collected Letters of Thomas [TC] and Jane Welsh [JWC] Carlyle is regarded by biographers, historians, critics, students, and general readers as one of the finest and most comprehensive literary archives of the nineteenth century. Thirty-nine volumes have been published to date in book form by Duke University Press, and the first 35 volumes of the project have been mounted into The Carlyle Letters Online (http://www.carlyleletters.org), with volumes 36-38 now in the process of being encoded, edited, and set for incorporation in summer 2012. This culmination of a ten-year effort to bring the Carlyles to the digital world has greatly increased the global accessibility of the edition. Through Oct. 2011 of the current grant period, which began in July 2009, the CLO has had more than 560,000 of its full-text html pages accessed in more than 100 countries and has established itself as a leader in the now essential field of digital humanities.

Abstract: The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle offer a window onto the lives of two of the Victorian world’s most accomplished, perceptive, and unusual inhabitants. Scottish writer and historian Thomas Carlyle and his wife, Jane Welsh Carlyle, attracted to them a circle of foreign exiles, radicals, feminists, revolutionaries, and major and minor writers from across Europe and the United States. Volume 40 of The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle includes 242 letters and covers the period from January to August 1864. There are 169 letters by Thomas Carlyle (TC), 62 by Jane Welsh Carlyle (JWC), and 11 by Maggie Welsh on behalf of JWC. The period is dominated by JWC’s painful and extreme illness, and TC’s grim struggle to complete his biography of Frederick the Great. Tormented by an unidentifiable malady, which left her sleepless and in fear of losing her sanity, JWC sought refuge among old friends and relatives in Scotland. Though sympathetic to her plight, TC found it difficult to release himself from his Prussian labors. His awkwards efforts to comfort and assist her frequently provoked her wrath and her sardonic humor, yet his concern was sincere. Their deep affection for each other during this agonizing stretch of fear and uncertainty did not waver, and was constantly expressed. The volume is a vivid testimony of their mutal powers of love and endurance, in the midst of JWC’s terrible suffering.
