To contribute to the understanding of those communal life styles of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries which underlay, in the immediate context, the American Revolution, and contemporary American ideals of community. The project is a broad-based, computer-assisted investigation of a southern, bi-racial, open-country community from settlement to the eve of the American Revolution; its results, published as a book, will complement and extend contemporary studies of New England and Middle Colony communities.
