Aleppo, Syria in Flatbush: A Study of Metropolitan Ethnic Community

FAIN: RS-10105-77

Joseph A. D. Sutton
Unaffiliated Independent Scholar (Brooklyn, NY 11230)

The project will study a small ethnic group, the Sephardic Jews who originated in Aleppo, Syria, and who are represented in the U.S. in a small section of Flatbush in Brooklyn, New York. The community is highly resistant to the assimilative pressures which have made deep inroads on most immigrant groups; this project will seek the sources which animate this resistance to assimilation and will perhaps serve as an added tool in the quest for an understanding of the dynamics of evolving ethnic configurations.
