Computerization, Publication and Preliminary Analysis of the Massachusetts Tax Valuation Lists of 1771

To make the 1771 Mass. tax valuation lists available to scholars in forms which can be easily read and thoroughly analyzed by computer. At the present time these lists can be used only with great difficulty either at the State Archives or on microfilm. Computerization, publication and preliminary analysis of the data they contain will make possible major advances in the study of 18th c. Mass. society, its economic structure, the lifestyles of its common citizens and, indirectly, the nature of the political revolution which transformed it from, a colony to a sovereign state.
