To create a socioeconomic census for New York City for the years 1789- 90 and 1810. The census will combine tax assessment records, federa1 census, and city directories. The study will provide fresh and unavailable data on New York's socio-economic development, the process of the city's urbanization, and the socio-economic influences on its political process in this important period in the city's history.
